Verizon and the University of South Carolina have launched the 5G Innovation Experience Hub. The hub, which will use the carrier’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, will be at the McNair Center in Columbia.

The goal is to provide a place for students, faculty, entrepreneurs and corporate partners to use 5G to support manufacturing, healthcare, civil infrastructure and other sectors.

“Working with the University of South Carolina, we have a great opportunity to collaborate with dozens of partners to ideate and develop new 5G-powered solutions leveraging the latest technologies, including large-scale IoT, artificial intelligence, computer vision and augmented reality,” Jennifer Artley, Verizon Business Senior Vice President of 5G Acceleration, said in a press release. “Verizon is the network America relies on. Giving researchers access to Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband, with its high bandwidth and low latency, can accelerate the innovation process, leading to new solutions that will transform how enterprises operate and grow.”

Some of the sectors and uses cases to be researched at the Verizon 5G Innovation Experience Hub include:

  • Manufacturing: Improvement of manufacturing processes with quality sensing and defect detection.
  • Healthcare:  Improvement in emergency response by enabling remote health monitoring and real time analysis of vital signs; streamlining of hospital asset management, retrieval and dispatch operations.
  • Civil engineering: Monitoring of roads and bridges with condition analytics and drone-based visual inspection of roads, bridges and buildings using AI-powered computer.

The University of South Carolina hub is one of many that Verizon has launched. In June, 2021, Verizon Business and Truist Innovation & Technology Center launched in Charlotte, NC. It is a 100,000 square-foot Innovation & Technology Center that features individual working spaces, collaboration hubs, a client research lab, and a variety of open and closed meeting rooms and areas to “recharge and re-energize.”

In November, 2020, Verizon Business opened a 5G Innovation Hub in in Lake Nona, a “living lab” smart community in Orlando, FL. The focus includes use cases in healthcare, autonomous mobility, smart communities, education and retail.
