GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After a decade of growth, Grand Rapids’ population is declining slightly, new census estimates show, even as developments spring up around the city and officials report strong demand for new housing and a tight rental market.

Estimates released in May by the Census Bureau put the city’s population at 196,908, down 843 people from the prior year. It was the third consecutive year the city saw a slight population loss after peaking in 2019 at an estimated 201,013, census data show.
