MAS elections

The Minority Affairs Section (MAS) Governing Council welcomed the following four new members elected in April 2023, and whose terms begin on June 14 after the adjournment of the AMA House of Delegates meeting in Chicago:

  • Jasmin Eatman, Medical Student Section representative to replace Angel Chavez Rivera
  • Judith Flores, MD, National Hispanic Medical Association to replace Sam Arce, MD
  • Sylvester Moses, MD, PhD, Young Physicians Section representative to replace Priscilla Mpasi, MD
  • LeeAnna Muzquiz, MD, Association of American Indian Physicians representative to replace Siobhan Wescott, MD, MPH

Their bios can be found on the MAS election web site. In addition, Dr. Wescott will continue to serve on the governing council through June 2024 as immediate past chair.

The governing council also elected its new officers for June 2023–June 2024. Shannon Zullo, MD, the Resident & Fellow Section representative, was elected as chair. Rachel Villanueva, MD, National Medical Association representative, was elected as vice chair. Their one-year terms begin June 14.

MAS resolutions

MAS resolutions

Luis Seija, MD, Advocacy Committee chair and MAS delegate, and Siobhan Wescott, MD, MPH, chair and alternate delegate, introduced four resolutions to the AMA House of Delegates:

  • Res. 014–Redressing the Harms of Misusing Race in Medicine
  • Res. 319–Supporting Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Offices and Initiatives at United States Medical Schools to Enhance Longitudinal Community Engagement
  • Res. 320–Banning Affirmative Action is a Critical Threat to Health Equity and to the Medical Profession
  • Res. 431–Qualified Immunity Reform

These resolutions were co-sponsored by the National Medical Association.

MAS education programs and engagement

Engagement Committee Chair Elizabeth Valencia, MD, JD, presented the following programs during the Annual Meeting:

  • United Leaders In Advocacy meeting for underrepresented medical students, co-sponsored by the Medical Student Section
  • American Indian/Alaska Native Physicians Work-Group meeting for physicians and medical students, co-sponsored by the Medical Student Section
  • “Future of Diversity in Medical Education” panel discussion
  • “Reimagining How Mental health, Wellness, and Burnout are Addressed among Medical Students and Trainees” panel discussion
  • “Townhall on Finding Common Ground In Conversations On Health Equity, Race & Medicine”
  • MAS & Allies Leader-To-Leader Reception, co-sponsored by the Center for Health Equity and the Ambassadors Program
  • IMGS/MAS Delegates Caucus
  • MAS Delegates Caucus

In addition, Dr. Valencia brought seven of her students from the Alix School of Medicine at Mayo Clinic to participate in their first AMA Annual Meeting.

In the coming months, select MAS Governing Council representatives along with a designated Medical Student Section representative will attend the annual meetings hosted by the following URM medical society strategic partners:

  • National Medical Association, July 30-Aug. 2 in New Orleans
  • Association of American Indian Physicians and the Association of Native American Medical Students, Sept. 7-10 in San Diego
  • Latino Medical Student Association, Sept. 14-17 in Atlanta
