MEDWAY — Principal John Murray is pleased to announce that Medway High School has received a grant to advance its Innovation Pathway in Healthcare and Social Assistance.
The grant, in the amount of $75,000, will go toward the purchase of equipment, materials and supplies — such as skeletons, mannequins and microscopes — for the Pathway. The grant will also fund additional support to oversee and develop internship opportunities for students in the Pathway.
The Innovation Pathway in Healthcare and Social Assistance is the first Pathway offered at MHS, designated by the state in the spring of 2022. The Pathway aims to give students access to real-world hands-on training to prepare them for careers in medicine, nursing, emergency medical services and more.
In the Healthcare Assistance Pathway, students take biomedical courses offered in partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Courses in the PLTW Biomedical Science Pathway may include Principles of Biomedical Systems, Human Body Systems and Medical Interventions.
As part of the Pathway, students also participate in an internship with a local healthcare partner for up to 100 hours, and complete a capstone experience during which they will do a project of their interest in relation to the Pathway.
Innovation Pathways are designed to give students coursework and experience in specific high-demand industries. The ‘real-world’ Pathways allow great flexibility for students who want hands-on experiences and high-level coursework that will prepare them well for both college and careers.
Through their participation in the Pathway, students build career awareness, gain skills and participate in classroom and work-based learning.
Innovation Pathway programs designated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts include Information Technology, Engineering, Healthcare, Life Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing.
